Finding Balance Amidst Chaos: My Journey as a Single Mom Physician

Navigating Single Parenthood in Healthcare:

Hello, dear readers,

Today, I want to dive into a topic that's close to my heart - navigating single parenthood in the healthcare field. As a single mom physician myself, I understand firsthand the unique challenges and rewards that come with balancing a demanding career with the responsibilities of parenthood.

When I first embarked on this journey of single parenthood, I'll admit, I was overwhelmed. The long hours, the constant juggling act, the never-ending to-do lists - it all seemed insurmountable at times. But amidst the chaos, I discovered a reservoir of strength and resilience within myself that I never knew existed.

Let's Dive into Navigating Single Parenthood in Healthcare

Embracing Imperfection: One of the most important lessons I've learned as a single mom physician is the power of embracing imperfection. There will be days when everything goes according to plan, and there will be days when nothing goes right. And that's okay. Perfection is an illusion, and it's in our imperfections that we find our true strength and resilience.

Being My Own Best Friend: Recently, I've been reflecting on the phrase "being my own best friend." It's about how I talk to myself and, more importantly, how I show up for myself.

Just the other day, I had planned to go for a run after work. Despite looking forward to it all day, when I got home late, my brain started giving me every reason why NOT running was the best choice. But then I had a new thought - "I want to show up for myself like I would show up for my friend." I wouldn't bail on a friend last minute, so why do I do it to myself? So I pushed through the momentary discomfort, changed my clothes, and went down to the treadmill…. And 30 minutes later, I FELT SO GOOD! Partly because of the running-released endorphins and partly because I followed through for myself, even when I didn’t want to.

I want to show myself the same compassion and encouragement that I would show my best friend. My best friends show compassion when I don’t succeed, and celebrate and encourage when I do. THIS is how I want to show up for myself.
